March 14 is Pi Day (3.14 get it?), or as I like to think of it – Pie Day! If you’ve been following along at all, you know that pie is one of my favorite things. So a day dedicated to getting as much of it as possible into my pie hole has some pretty powerful appeal for me. I floated the idea of an all-pie party to some friends, hoping that a few might rally. I have to say that for a random Tuesday night, they represented.
Everyone had to bring a pie. Didn’t matter whether it was savory or sweet, as long as it was homemade. No store-bought nonsense for this crew of pie aficionados! A bit of cheating with store-bought crust was allowed if absolutely necessary – I did after all want people to show up for the party. And show up they did… we ended up having 14 pies (what a perfect number for Pi Day!) – six savory and eight sweet.
Savory Pies
Being the mature adults that we are, we started with the savory pies. Who am I kidding? I’ve been known on more than one occasion to eat pie a la mode for breakfast. Nonetheless, we’ll start with the savory pies.
Robert made a Swiss Zwiebelkuchen, which is a bacon and onion pie.
Nelson made a curry chicken pot pie, which had a nice spice to it.
Heather made these fancy Italian meat pies with mushrooms, tomato, onion, and bacon in a blue cheese orange liqueur cream sauce.
Katy made a Cornish game hen, chorizo, and ham raised pie. Check out that amazing cross-section with the boiled eggs, and the cute pigs on top!
Alyssa made a Pirog, which is a large version of a Russian hand pie, filled with meat and glass noodles (her family’s twist because her grandmother was born and raised in China).
Cindy made a seafood shepherd’s pie. Instead of the usual ground beef or lamb, it had salmon and shrimp.
So that you get a glimpse of the insides too, look at my glorious plate of savory pies!
Sweet Pies
By now if you’re like me, you have not exercised any self-restraint and are pretty stuffed. But there’s nothing that’s going to get between you and eight different sweet pies (plus vanilla ice cream)!
Michael made a bourbon pecan pie, emphasis on the bourbon!
Halina made a wild blueberry pie.
Colin made a key lime pie.
Kamy made an apple pie with a whole wheat crust.
She also made an apple cinnamon walnut pie. Overachievers are always welcome at my pie parties.
Shayna made a summer berry pie.
Erin made a lemon meringue pie.
I made a mango lassi pie (find my Guessipe here).
Anthony brought vanilla ice cream, because I must eat apple and berry pies a la mode. I did not do a good job plating all my sweet pies, but I did a good job eating them!
What a fun idea!
