This was one of my mom’s go-to dishes when I was a kid, and as an adult I found out why… it’s easy and delicious. The seasoning she used was super basic – just garlic salt, salt, and pepper, with a touch of sugar to enhance the savory. But the kielbasa and the caramelization of the onion and cabbage do most of the heavy flavor lifting for you. The carrots left mostly crisp provide complementary texture. My only modification is to add a little chili paste for some extra punch (optional if you don’t like spice).
Guessipe
- 1 kielbasa sausage (14 oz), sliced
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 head cabbage, chopped
- 3 carrots, thinly sliced
- 1 TBSP chili paste
- 1 tsp sugar
- garlic salt to taste
- salt and pepper to taste
Sauté the kielbasa over medium-high heat until it begins to brown. Set aside.
In the same pan (no added oil necessary, as the kielbasa will have released oil), sauté the onion until it begins to turn translucent.
Add the cabbage and continue to cook until the cabbage gets tender.
Stir in the carrots, chili paste, sugar, garlic salt, salt, and pepper.
Add the browned kielbasa back in and continue to cook, stirring until the sausage is heated through.
