Living in LA, you see lots of TV studios promoting their shows in the lead-up to the Emmys. Most of the time I just ignore them, but this year Amazon did a massively scaled promotion for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel… 1959 prices for goods and services at some of LA’s most iconic retailers! Most of the Maisel Day promos were “while supplies last” and “walk-ins only”, so the skeptic in me suspected that the waits would be so long and these offers would be so limited as to be practically non-existent. But it seemed like too good of a deal to pass up, so Sheana and I decided to make a day of it, figuring that if nothing else it would be a fun excuse to traipse around the city together.
First stop – Mel’s Drive-In. There is absolutely nothing wrong with eating a cheeseburger, fries, milkshake, and apple pie at 9:00 in the morning.
Our decision to start at Mel’s was not just gluttony, though based on this post I can hardly deny we are gluttons. I think I can fairly argue, however, that at least we were strategic with our gluttony. Blushington was offering makeovers, but it was walk-in only, so we arrived when they opened at 8am (there was already a line) and put our names on the list. Then we headed next door to Mel’s for our burger breakfast. Our timing was perfect – we finished at Mel’s, popped back over to Blushington, and within 10 minutes were being made over.
Full-Face Makeover $2.50
Before After
Next we headed to Laduree at The Grove for macarons.
Macaron $.25
Just in time for lunch, we walked across the street to Canter’s Deli for their famous pastrami.
Pastrami Sandwich $.99
Time for a little break from eating! Over to Palisades Village to see a movie at Bay Theatre. The Kitchen had two seats left and was about to start when we arrived, so we went for it.
Movie $.51
Once we were done with our afternoon activity, it was time to eat again. McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams is also in Palisades Village, so we walked over.
Ice Cream Cone $.25
By this point in the day, we’d been hearing from our fellow Maisel Day line-waiters that most places were sold out. But we called Cafe 50’s and they assured us they were still serving up malted milkshakes. You can never have too much ice cream, so we hopped in the car.
Malted Milkshake $.30
So after 9 hours, we’d successfully managed 2 meals, 3 snacks, a makeover, and a movie – all for the sum total of $6.00! We’d braved LA traffic, made friends during our waits in line, and all in all had a marvelous Maisel Day. Now I’m even inspired to check out the show (oh, did I mention I’ve never seen it!?).
