Cookbook Club – doriegreenspan.com
For February’s Cookbook Club, we used a blog instead of a cookbook – https://doriegreenspan.com. I made the Mustard Batons. You can check out our whole Dorie dinner on my Cookbook Club site. For now – my dish!
I had an event to go to before the Cookbook Club party, so I will admit that I was looking for a recipe that I could crank out super quickly. The Mustard Batons fit the bill, with only a few ingredients, one of which was store-bought puff pastry. The recipe described them as “startlingly easy, chic, and delicious”, which it turns out they were.
I rolled puff pastry out into a rectangle about 12” x 16”.
I spread a layer of Dijon mustard over half the puff pastry. The recipe said to stop 1/8 inch from the edges, but next time I would just go all the way to the edge.
I folded the blank half of the puff pastry over the mustarded half, then cut into 1-inch wide strips.
I gave the tops an egg wash. The recipe said you could then sprinkle with poppy seeds, salt, cheese, or whatever you might want, so I chose Himalayan pink sea salt.
Into the 400 degree oven for 8 minutes, rotate the pan and bake another 8 minutes, and voila… mustard batons!
These did indeed turn out to be as easy as advertised. While they wouldn’t ever be the centerpiece of a meal, they were tasty and look like the kind of thing that’s impressive when homemade. Great for when you want to add a little something extra to a party without a whole lot of extra effort!
